5 Bridal Dress Tests You Must Do Before Saying Yes to the Dress
A beautiful dress matters — but comfort is what actually gets you through a 12–16 hour wedding day. As a wedding photographer based in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal, I spend entire days right beside brides, watching how their dress holds up from the first look to the last dance. So before you commit to "the one," here are five simple tests worth doing in the fitting room.
1. The Breathe Test
Take a deep breath in, and out. If the dress feels restrictive, digs in, or has you counting down the minutes until you can take it off, it's probably too tight. You deserve to look amazing and breathe comfortably — for eight-plus hours straight.
2. The Sit Test
You paid good money for that wedding dinner, so you should be able to enjoy it. Sit down properly. Lean back. Cross your legs if that's your thing. If sitting feels awkward, uncomfortable, or impossible in the dress, it's worth reconsidering.
3. The Dance Test
Can you move your legs freely? Can you get through your first dance without feeling restricted? This one matters more than people expect — and if you're planning on getting low on the dance floor later in the night, your reception-self will thank you for testing this now.
4. The Scratch Test
Pay attention to your underarms, chest, waist, and torso. Lace, beading, or boning might feel fine for the first ten minutes in the fitting room — but after ten hours of wear? That's a different story entirely. Scratchy fabric has no place in a wedding-day accessory.
5. The Security Test
Are the girls secure? Do you feel supported and confident? If you're constantly pulling up, adjusting, tucking in, or checking that everything's still in place, that feeling will get old fast — and it'll be hard to relax and be present for your own day. Your dress should stay exactly where it's meant to.
Your wedding dress should make you feel beautiful, comfortable, confident, and free to enjoy every moment. Because the best bridal look isn't just stunning in photos — it's one you can actually live in, dance in, and laugh in, all day long.
