Why Every Bride Should Consider a Veil
Not every bride plans on wearing a veil — and that's a completely personal choice. But after photographing weddings across KwaZulu-Natal, I've seen firsthand what a veil can do for your photos that almost nothing else can. If you're on the fence, here's what a veil actually brings to your wedding day, beyond tradition.
It sets an elegant tone
There's a quiet elegance to a veil that a dress alone doesn't quite capture — the soft layer over your shoulders, catching light as you turn. It's a small addition with an outsized effect on how a portrait feels.
It creates drama
A long veil, caught mid-movement or trailing across a landscape, instantly adds a sense of scale and drama to a photo. It transforms a simple portrait into something that feels editorial.
It captures and holds light
Veils are made from delicate, sheer fabric — which means they catch golden hour light in a way that's almost impossible to recreate with anything else. This is one of my favourite things to photograph, and it consistently produces some of the most striking images from a wedding day.

A still photo can only say so much. A veil caught in the wind, thrown, or twirled brings genuine motion into your images — turning a posed moment into something that feels alive and spontaneous.

A veil doesn't compete with your dress — it frames it, drawing the eye toward the details you (and your dressmaker) worked hard on. Held closer, it also softly frames your face, especially in quieter, more intimate portraits.

Whether it's a princess-style carriage exit or a quiet moment getting ready with your bridesmaids, a veil adds a layer of romance that's hard to manufacture any other way. It photographs beautifully in both bright, warm light and moody, overcast conditions.

Mist, rain, wind, an umbrella, contrasting textures like flowers or old stone archways — a veil tends to elevate all of it. Some of the most memorable, editorial-feeling images come from unpredictable weather paired with a veil in motion.

Getting ready is its own story — a mother fastening the veil, a sister adjusting the length, a quiet moment at the mirror before the day begins. These in-between moments, made possible by a veil, are often the ones couples treasure most once the excitement of the day has settled.
